TRADER JOE’S DELIVERY ACADEMIC PROPOSAL PROJECT

Trader Joe’s is a national chain of neighborhood grocery stores. In response to the shift in consumer delivery culture, we offer user experience solutions for Trader Joe’s to expand their culture of community, diversity, and convenience.

THE OPPORTUNITY

How can we provide a convenient delivery service to our customers and potentially increase the reach of the Trader Joe’s brand while maintaining Trader Joe’s customer service experience?

OUR GOAL

  • Further embed Trader Joe’s in the neighborhoods that they serve

  • To provide scheduled delivery options

  • Allow customers to check item availability at their preferred Trader Joe’s location

  • Maintain and extend customer service experience

  • Increase Trader Joe’s reach to bring in new customers

ASSUMPTIONS

Project:

  • Trader Joe’s employees attend Design Team meetings and communicate during business hours.

    Website:

  • Access website when using a desktop computer, smartphone, or tablet computer with a web browser.

  • No order and delivery app.

    Customer:

  • Trader Joe’s account is not necessaryto be eligible for delivery services.

  • Unwanted products must be returned to the store to receive credit or exchange when returned to the store.

    Store:

  • Store inventory is the basis for determining if a product is available for delivery.

  • Each store has a storage area for holding orders, especially overnight

    Delivery:

  • Deliver can occur when deliverer can return to the store at least 15 minutes before closing.

  • All orders for delivery start in the online order process.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Our competitors' online presence offers users order and delivery services by way of critical features positioned on their websites. These features include product mix, promotions, recipes, store location, with pickup and delivery solutions. Competitors demonstrate user interface investments on their brand websites and mobile apps for users to participate in online purchasing and grocery delivery. Instacart is a prime transport operations partner for competitors, offering their consumers alternatives to choose their recognizable grocery store, enabling competitors to enhance their dedicated shopper's experience and to extend to new demographic users.

  • We intend to maintain the familiarity and visual simplicity that the customer has come to expect from Trader Joe’s.

  • Maintaining the same continuity in the digital space that our customers experience in our stores is important to the Trader Joe’s community.

For Trader Joe’s updated website, we’ve included a delivery option as well as a cart option.

Our wireframes represents Trader Joe’s newest page of item selections as well as an assistance chat.

UX BENCHMARKING

OVERALL APPROACH

The team’s approach to user experience benchmark activities is to evaluate the ease of access and ability of the order creation and delivery process webpages. It uses the publicly available best practice methodology on the usability.gov website.

PROJECT TIMELINE

Plan to integrate agile methods with user experience methods to create great products that don’t abandon usability while chasing after speedy programming. Scrum method provides the structure for cross-functional team members to contribute ideas, share responsibilities, and refine the process together.
